Lentil Burgers, Crispy on the Outside and Creamy on the Inside: A Vegan Recipe

Lentil Burgers, Crispy on the Outside and Creamy on the Inside: A Vegan Recipe…

Hamburger or lentil burger? If we wanted to be precise we should say “burger”! Do you know why? The English noun “hamburger” contains the word “ham” which means “ham,” this means that only the real meat burger can be called that!

In recent years, many vegetarian and vegan alternatives to the classic hamburger are being experimented with. Since these are meatless, that is, without “ham,” we will call them “burgers”!

Ingredients:

  • 50g  / 1/4 cup dried lentils
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  • 1/2 celery stalk
  • 1 carrot
  • 1/4 red onion
  • 3 tablespoons breadcrumbs
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Extra virgin olive oil, as needed

How to Prepare Lentil Burgers:

  1. Cook dried lentils in plenty of unsalted water with 1 bay leaf and half a teaspoon of baking soda. Cook them for about 1 hour over medium-low heat after they reach a boil (they should have absorbed all the water by the end of cooking).
  2. Mince celery carrot and onion in a blender, then brown the mixture in a pan with a little oil.
  3. Add the browned mince to the cooked lentils, then add the breadcrumbs, salt and pepper, and finally mix well until smooth.
  4. Form the burgers with your hands and cook them 5 minutes per side in an oiled pan.
  5. Compose your vegan (ham)burger: I added spicy zucchini in oil and cherry tomatoes.
