Texas Toast Sloppy Joes: A Comforting Twist on a Classic…
This recipe puts a delicious spin on traditional Sloppy Joes by using thick-cut Texas toast instead of hamburger buns. The result is a hearty sandwich with a perfect balance of crispy, buttery bread and savory, tangy filling.
Ingredients:
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil (15ml)
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1 bell pepper (capsicum), diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef (minced beef)
- 1/2 cup (120ml) ketchup
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp mustard
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 8 slices Texas toast (or thick-cut white bread)
How to make Texas Toast Sloppy Joes:
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large frying pan over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion and bell pepper. Sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
- Add the ground beef, breaking it up with a wooden spoon. Cook until browned and no longer pink, about 8 minutes.
- Drain excess fat if necessary. Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and smoked paprika.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste. Simmer for 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken.
- While the beef mixture simmers, toast the Texas toast slices until golden brown.
- Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture onto 4 slices of toast. Top with the remaining slices to form sandwiches.
Serve immediately and enjoy this comforting American classic with a crispy twist!
Note: If Texas toast isn’t available, use thick slices of white bread, lightly buttered on both sides and toasted in a pan or under the grill (broiler) until golden.
