Tornado Potatoes: Street Food Brought Straight to Your Home…

Tornado potatoes are a street food loved all over the world! Finely cut potatoes spiral (hence the name tornado) around a wooden toothpick that allows you to eat them comfortably while standing, walking around town and why not… maybe even at home during a casual dinner or a nice barbecue in the garden!

Ingredients:

  • 4 potatoes (preferably elongated with a regular shape)
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour (plain flour)
  • 6 tablespoons cold water (sparkling water is better, but still water is fine)
  • 1 tablespoon sweet paprika
  • 400g (14 oz) vegetable oil (sunflower oil, canola oil)
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon sriracha sauce

How To Prepare Tornado Potatoes:

  1. Wash the potatoes and peel them. Thread each potato with a wooden toothpick lengthwise.
  2. Using a knife, cut the potatoes around the toothpick giving a spiral shape. Cut continuously making sure to create a single spiral (see video).
  3. In a bowl place the flour, water, and paprika. Mix together and coat the potatoes with the resulting batter.
  4. Bring the seed oil to temperature inside a large frying pan and fry the tornado potatoes, turning them on all sides, until golden brown and crispy. Meanwhile, prepare the spicy mayonnaise by mixing together the mayonnaise and sriracha sauce in a small bowl.
  5. Once cooked, arrange the tornado potatoes on a sheet of paper towels to blot off excess oil and add salt. Then arrange them on a serving plate or cutting board along with the accompanying sauce and serve hot.
